About IWDF

Who We Are

The International Women’s Development Foundation (IWDF) is a dynamic force for change, committed to advancing women’s rights, gender equality, and empowerment across social, economic, and political spheres. We challenge systemic barriers that perpetuate inequality while equipping women and girls with the knowledge, skills, and platforms to lead and inspire change.

By partnering with governments, civil society, and the private sector, we close gender gaps, expand opportunities, and foster inclusive leadership. Our initiatives focus on leadership development, economic empowerment, freedom from violence, and women’s central role in peace and humanitarian action. Through global advocacy, we unite women from diverse backgrounds and ensure their voices shape the policies that define our future.

Through education, skill development, advocacy, and community engagement, we equip women with the tools and opportunities they need to thrive. By challenging systemic inequalities and amplifying women's voices, we strive to create a world where every woman can contribute her fullest potential to advance global development.

Ruwini Senanayaka

Founder & Director, IWDF

“To empower a woman, society must first learn to accept and value her.”

A woman’s ability to contribute her talents to the world depends greatly on the society that surrounds her. Across the globe, young women strive in countless ways to rise, to lead, and to leave their mark. Though men and women may differ, both are essential to the construction of human civilization — and women’s contribution to that progress has always been profound.

Every culture, nation, and community defines womanhood differently. The social expectations placed upon women vary widely, as do the challenges they face. These differences make it difficult to form a single, universal definition of what it means to be a woman. Yet, through my own experiences as a woman, I have come to believe that we must never fear moving forward. The barriers society builds are temporary; courage, education, and unity can overcome them

To be born a woman is not a limitation — it is a gift. Womanhood is a source of strength, compassion, and creativity. The goal is not to create competition between men and women, but to foster mutual respect, shared understanding, and partnership. A truly just and peaceful society is built not through division, but through harmony and inclusivity

At the International Women’s Development Foundation, we envision a world where every woman is recognized as a leader, a change-maker, and a pillar of progress. We believe that when women rise, humanity rises with them.

“Empowering women is not about creating superiority — it’s about restoring balance.”
